The air crackled with the joy of Easter Sunday at our orphanage in Uganda. The children, dressed in their finest, sang hymns of hope and resurrection. But amidst the celebration, a small figure appeared in our garden, a tiny girl, her face streaked with tears and distressed. We later learned her name was Alice and she was 7 years old.
Alice had wandered a long way, and it was clear she needed help. She had noticeably large hemangiomas on her face, a condition requiring specialized surgery. John, our director, immediately took her to the police station, filed a report, and then to the hospital for a thorough evaluation to ensure she wasn't in any immediate danger. While John was at the hospital, one of our team members began the search for a clinic that could treat Alice's condition. Miraculously, she found one in Entebbe, a considerable six-hour journey away, and they were willing to see her quickly.
The next day, we received a call from the police. Alice hadn't been abandoned. She had wandered off from her family and, after hours of walking, had found her way to our orphanage. Her mother had been desperately searching for her and was overjoyed and relieved when she arrived. We shared the news about the clinic in Entebbe and the possibility of free surgery. The family's circumstances were dire; they couldn't even afford the trip. John offered to take Alice to the surgery, and thankfully, the clinic was offering its services free of charge. Our only expenses were transportation and food during her stay.
However, a new challenge arose. Doctors discovered that Alice was severely malnourished. To ensure she could withstand the surgery, they recommended that she stay with us for a month to gain weight and improve her immune system, which we were happy to do. This picture shows her and a new friend having pizza after church this past Sunday. The surgery was a complete success! Alice's life was transformed, and we offered her a full scholarship to our school. She now stays with us during the school year, returning to her family on weekends and during holidays.
In the midst of this incredible journey, an even greater miracle occurred. John led Alice's stepfather to the Lord, and he was saved.
God is so good! This Easter, amidst the celebration of a resurrected Jesus, we witnessed a miracle unfold. A lost child found safety and was reunited with her family. A community, both near and far, rallied together to provide hope and healing for this little girl. Alice's story is a testament to the moving power of compassion and the unwavering love of God. It shows that with faith, a new start is possible not only for a child but for an entire family.
