Look closely at this photograph. You can see the worry etched on this mother’s face and the weariness in her eyes. When she arrived at Small Miracles holding her baby, Kawa, she was at the end of a long and desperate journey. Kawa’s tonsils and adenoids had become so enlarged that they had already blocked her ability to eat. Worse, they were slowly cutting off her ability to breathe. It was a mother’s worst nightmare, and she fought for her daughter’s life with everything she had. She carried Kawa to four different hospitals, begging for someone to help. But at every door, the answer was the same: no treatment without payment first. It was a price she could not pay. When she had nowhere else to turn, she came to us. Our team immediately began searching all over Uganda for a hospital that would perform the delicate surgery at a reduced cost. Once we found a compassionate surgeon willing to help, we made an urgent plea to you, our online community. The response was a miracle. In just a couple of days, the funds for Kawa’s life-saving surgery were raised. We are overjoyed to report that Kawa’s surgery was a complete success. Today, she is healthy, happy, and breathing freely, all because her mother refused to give up and a community of strangers refused to look away. This is the power of collective compassion. Thank you for being the answer to a mother’s desperate prayer and for giving Kawa the beautiful gift of a healthy future.
